This paper deals with multiple hedges with non-factive verbs and phrases in political interviews in Serbian and English. Political interview, as a specific type of political discourse, is increasingly present in the media and is becoming the main form of communication between political actors and the public. This type of interview is both a source of information for the public and a means for conducting political campaigns. Since politicians are responsible to their voters for their every action and statement, they must choose carefully what to say and how to say it. One of the important characteristics of their discourse is the hedging of propositional content, because they sometimes cannot or do not want to give an explicit answer to delicate questions. In these cases, they use one or more hedges to make their statements acceptable to the public without compromising or committing themselves. Linguistic disciplines that deal with the analysis of all types of discourse, including political and media discourse, are pragmatics and critical discourse analysis, which represent the theoretical basis of this paper. Examining political interviews in English and Serbian, our goal has been to classify and describe multiple hedges used by politicians in conversations and determine their discursive functions, as well as to perform a contrastive analysis of the use of hedges in these two languages. The results have generally confirmed the initial hypotheses about the main functions of multiple hedges.

This paper deals with Elizabeth von Arnim’s 1922 novel The Enchanted April as an example of modernist travel narrative. The novel focuses on four different women vacationing together in Italy for a month and the present analysis aims to address how these protagonists experience otherness – of the Italian place, their own emotions, and one another. To this effect, the analysis relies on the theoretical concept of heterotopia and descriptions of Christian love. Close reading of selected excerpts, which prominently feature free indirect discourse (as a signifier of otherness in the text), reveals that otherness can be overcome through sharing and love mediated through the specific (heterotopic) spatial setting, which bears the aspects of sacredness and the potential for transformation.

The aim of this article is to analyse the application of strategies and procedures in translating religious terminology from Serbian source text "Čarape kralja Petra" by Milovan Vitezović into English and French. Drawing on a combination of Venuti’s and Newmark’s theories, we will attempt to identify the translation strategies and procedures and determine to what extent the translator uses domestication or foreignization, and thus creates either a translation that can be read fluently and which does not contain the specificities of the source text, or a translation that emphasizes cultural diversity and thus respects both the culture and the writer of the original text. We start from the assumption that even though all three languages belong to the Christian culture, Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodox Christianity, their respective religious terminologies differ significantly. Therefore, the translator’s task should be to produce a translation that can be read fluently while at the same time respecting the cultural diversity in question. Our initial assumptions that the two translations are examples of different strategies have proven to be only partially true. The results show the obvious prevalence of the domestication strategy in both translations, with the exception of the non-equivalence and proper names and toponyms, which proves that the translators actually moved away from the original text.

Media discourse has been in the focus of linguistic research for almost half a century. The publication of the seminal book Language and Control (Fowler et al., 1979) marks the beginnings of a then new field of research – Critical linguistics, today known as Critical Discourse Analysis or Critical Discourse Studies. One of the first instances of the critical media discourse analysis was the linguistic analysis of the newspaper coverage of the Salisbury (today Harare) police, in what was in 1975 still Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe), firing into a crowd of unarmed people and shooting eleven of them (Trew, 1979: 94-116). The analysis showed how the usage of different vocabulary and various grammatical structures can reflect different political views. From then on, an abundance of articles and books have been written on media discourse, covering virtually all the media – both traditional and new – with the aim of disclosing the power relations both in and behind discourse. The proponents of Critical Discourse Analysis claim that the media play a decisive role in determining and shaping public opinion and that what they give us is largely propaganda that supports an oppressive and undemocratic status quo. While some researchers focus on the analysis of the discourse and uncovering social problems, others venture further afield and suggest that Critical Discourse Analysis should also attempt to find solutions to those problems. This type of research has inevitably become interdisciplinary because the analysis of complex social problems that it undertakes requires a combination of various scientific theories and methods. Therefore, the rapid development of this discipline and the abundance of research papers should not come as a surprise. The aim of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the research that has been done during the last fifty years in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis of media texts and speech.
